hazel Pete1914-2003Tribal old/ Master Basket Maker
As an active section of the Chehalis tribe, Hazel Pete has been an important influence in maintain tribal finale and traditions. Her basket making patterns have been passed on to generations of tribal and alliance members and contribute greatly to the continuation of this northwest Native American art form.
Elmer Smith1888-1932Legal Advocate
Elmer Smith, the fighting attorney of Centralia, is cognize as a compassionate labor attorney and unbendable friend of the downtrodden and powerless. Mr. Smith led a tireless urge on for the release of eight union timber workers imprisoned after the 1919 Centralia Armistice Day tragedy.
George Tsutakawa1910-1997Artist/Sculptor
A noted Nisei artist, Tsutakawa explored soldierys need for a harmonious relationship with nature. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII while his Seattle family was interned. He create his art while a professor at the University of upper-case letter and is best known for his spectacular fountains.
Dixy Lee Ray1914-1994Scientist/ educator/Governor
As a marine biologist and faculty member at the University of Washington, she addressed herself to ecological issues. Dr. Ray was appointed to the atomic Energy Commission in 1972 and assumed the role of theatre director the following year. She was elected Washingtons first woman governor serving from 1977-1981.
Phyllis Guitierrez Kenney1936-State Representative/Community Activist
Phyllis, the fille of Hispanic Immigrants grew up immersed in the plight of immigrant workers. After paltry to Seattle, she success exuberanty ran for a position in the State business firm of Representatives and began a long tenure representing the people of the 16th legislative district.
