Sandra Cisneros' "Only Daughter"

Despite her occupation and college endeavors, Cisneros secretly "wooed" her set about for his attention, although he seldom, if ever, interrupted her to ask what she was doing or why (p. 143).

Cisneros went to college and majored in English, something her father considered "silly," and her father's main purpose in further her to get an education was because college was "good for finding a keep up" (p. 142). Eventually, Cisneros returns bag for a visit, after experiencing some success as a writer. Her triumphs included winning two National Endowment for the arts scholarships; becoming a guest professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and issue a book. attack when she arrives home. She offers him a story she has published that has been translated into Spanish. To her amazement, her father turns of the TV set, reads her story, "laughed in all the right places," and asks her if he can memorize more copies for family members when he is finished, (Cisneros, p. 144).

As Cisneros maintains, of all the good things that happened to her in the year preceding her trip home, that moment was "the most extraordinary" (p. 145).

In conclusion, Only Daughter contains many elements of Cisneros' demeanor and upbringing that I recognize as part of my suffer life, particularly the narrowly defined roles for women and cultural expectations of marriage, family, and gender.
