In Tim OBrians novel The Things They Carried the role of motif is different for every character. Each object that they hold is uniform a symbol; a burden or a key to the mind of the character. For Jimmy Cross, his key items for this chapter are the pictures and garner that he carries with him. His motivation is linked to these pictures and earn.
