The film The Power of One, directed by John G. Avildsen is concerned with the prejudice that existed in South Africa prior to, and during the apartheid era of the 1940s. It challenges the racial segregation of the white and mordant communities and illuminates the senseless destruction that arises from a lack of understanding. The film utilises a variety symbols, motifs and characterisations to establish the archetype of the power of one. The film is heavily based upon the racial wrath of the white community towards the black community. The white Africans of South Africa adopted the military posture that it was their responsibility to push out the English, put down the black in order to repossess the land. This firm belief spawned the racial segregation and oppression of the black community and to a lesser extent, the English, in what is known as an apartheid.
